For over 17 years, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has been a frontrunner in the field of passive safety evaluation. With a dedicated team of experts and cutting-edge facilities, ARAI has become India’s premier test center for ensuring the safety of vehicles.

Full Vehicle Crash Test Facility:

ARAI boasts India’s first public domain crash test facility, validated and extensively used by leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The facility conducts comprehensive homologation testing according to both Indian and UNECE crash standards, including Full Frontal, Offset Frontal, Side Impact, and Rear Impact tests. Additionally, the facility serves as a Development Testing Facility for various NCAP rating tests, pole side impact studies, crumple zone optimization, airbag Electronic Control Unit (ECU) calibration, and more. The Crash Lab features state-of-the-art equipment, including crash test dummies, onboard data acquisition systems, high-speed cameras, and advanced injury analysis tools.

Advanced Deceleration Sled Test Facility:

ARAI’s Advanced Deceleration Sled Test Facility is fully equipped to conduct homologation and development tests for seats, restraint systems, luggage retention, interior fitting systems, dynamic testing of Child Restraint Systems (CRS), and laden tests with instrumented dummies. The facility has earned validation and accreditation from major OEMs.

Pedestrian Protection & Occupant Protection Test Facility:

ARAI’s Universal Impactor Test Facility evaluates pedestrian protection systems, interior fittings, and restraint systems. It conducts tests using TRL Legform, adult and child head forms, body block tests, and head impact tests. The facility is accredited by VCA, UK, and is poised for a proposed upgrade with FlexPLI.

Airbag Deployment Test Facility:

ARAI’s Airbag Deployment Test Facility specializes in deployment testing of airbag modules. The facility, equipped with a climatic chamber and high-speed cameras, is set for an upgrade to include testing for full-size instrument panels, seat-integrated side airbags, curtain airbags, firing tests on half-cut BIWs, and long-duration aging tests.

Child Restraint System Test Facility:

The Child Restraint System Test Facility at ARAI focuses on type approval for CRS, universal category CRS Gabarit, and ISOFIX Child Restraint Fixtures. It adheres to AIS072 and ECE R44 standards.

Side Door Intrusion & Bumper Testing Facility:

ARAI’s facility conducts quasi-static side door testing and bumper testing using a moving barrier, ensuring compliance with IS 12009, FMVSS 214, IS 15901, and ECE R42 standards.

Commercial Vehicle Testing Certification Facilities:

For commercial vehicles, ARAI provides testing facilities for cabins, frontal impact, roof strength, rear wall strength, tilting platform tests, and measurement of the center of gravity. It also tests underrun protection devices (UPDs) for front, rear, and lateral installations.

Anthropometry Database & Ergonomics Studies:

ARAI employs an Advanced 3-D Whole Body Scanner for anthropometric studies, featuring the SIZE INDIA Database. The institute offers benchmarking services for vehicle dimensions and interior dimensions, with facilities for ergonomic evaluation using pressure mats, pedal force sensors, and 3-D scanners.

High-Speed Photography & Data Acquisition:

Professional high-speed photography and data acquisition services are available for impact testing, with 2-D and 3-D image analysis using advanced software packages. Onsite data acquisition and high-speed photography projects are executed for premier R&D organizations.
